Ever since the headlining violent dispute with Rihanna and Chris Brown, both of their careers have taken an interesting turn. Chris Brown has still been able to deliver some modest hits(“Look At Me Now” and “She Ain’t You), but nothing that quite matches the spark of some of his earlier chart toppers. Rihanna’s career, on the other hand, has taken a steep upward swing….
Following the old adage, “Strike while the iron is hot,” Rihanna is cleverly doing just that. She definitely is not the best singer in the world, but to quote her hit single “Only Girl (In The World),” Rihanna is the ONLY solo female artist in history to have 6 #1 singles in 5 consecutive years. Her new song “We Found Love” will be a sure-fire bet for a 7th #1 hit. Rihanna seems to be capitalizing on the fact that all publicity is not good publicity…but it’s still publicity.
The concept of the video for “We Found Love” is controversial, but not quite in a way you would expect. But then again, maybe so (see “Man Down” and “S&M”). First off, I will say that the video is very artistic and creative. I probably wouldn’t have liked the song though if I didn’t see the video at the same time though.
Besides the fact that the video details a vicious cycle of depression, laughter, drugs, sex…and more drugs and sex, the lead male role for the video has a striking resemblance to Chris Brown. Could this be art imitating life? Who knows? One thing is for sure though…the video has already garnered much attention. Some positive and some negative, but the positive for Rihanna is that “We Found Love” was the #1 song on Itunes as soon as it was released and the #1 song in the UK after only 4 days of its initial release. Complete with abstract shots of flying pills and a disturbing clip of vomiting pink and white ribbons, Rihanna may not have found love yet, but looks like she’s on her way to finding another hit.
