Musical genius. Creator. Visionary. Inventor. Trendsetter. These are just some of the words that come to mind when I think of Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott. She first captured (on a widely large scale) the attention of fans with her quirky, Hype Williams directed music video “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).” From then on I was hooked. Who was this crazy woman dancing in a humongous trash bag with finger waves and baggy clothes? With her hilarious punch lines, addictive beats (produced largely by herself and Timbaland), and R & B style, there is really no other artist quite like her.
Missy has worked with just about everyone in the music business (Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jodeci, The Clark Sisters, R, Kelly, Katy Perry and many others). The interesting part about her music is she is just as entertaining as a singer as she is a rapper. Until recently, she has had a track record of releasing a CD every year and a half or so (2005’s Cookbook is my favorite). However, it’s been almost 6 years since her last studio CD. What is taking so long Missy?!?! We’ve heard her on some features here and there (check out J Cole’s “Nobody’s Perfect” from Cole World) and even some solo tracks (“Shake Your Pom Pom” and “Ching-A-Ling”). There has been talk of a new CD called Block Party for a couple of years, but no definite confirmation on that yet.
Perhaps some of this could be due to her recent diagnosis of Graves’ Disease. She broke her 3 year-long silence earlier this year about the disease on VH1’s Behind the Music. Hopefully she is doing better and being treated properly for her condition. In the meantime, we can catch her writing and producing for artists, but no clear sign on when she’ll record again. Nevertheless, her strong presence in music is definitely missed. Check out some of her videos over the years and a clip from her VH1 Behind the Music episode.
