Big Bird Says….Puff Puff Pass

“I like PBS … I love Big Bird,” he said, “but I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.” If you got a chance to catch last week’s presidential debate, then you more than likely heard Mitt Romney state the quote above.. It was one of the most awkward moments of the debate. Not to mention that the debate moderator, Jim Lehrer, works for PBS. Can you imagine the screams of kids around the country when they heard this news? 8-year-old Cecelia Crawford actually wrote a letter to the Romney campaigned and pleaded for her “favorite show on earth” to not get cancelled. What did Big Bird have to say about it? Last Thursday, he tweeted, “My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7! Did I miss anything last night?” But Big Bird did join Seth Meyers on this weekend’s SNL parody news report. Apparently, Big Bird has been mentioned for a while in Romney’s campaign though. In New Hampshire, he stated, “I’m not going to make Big Bird go away, but there’s going to be advertising on PBS if I’m president” in a less threatening tone in December of 2011. SMH…who knew Big Bird would be such a focal point of political debate???

PBS was not the only one biting its finger nails (or bird claws) and updating their resumes last week though. New Orleans assistant city attorney Jason Cantrell, should have found a better hiding place for his marijuana. He was talking to a police officer when his joint fell out of his pocket while he was in court. WTH?! Not that I’m condoning the use of drugs at all, but it seems like he would have been much smarter than this. Needless to say, the police officer didn’t have to work hard to crack this case. 43-year-old Cantrell immediately resigned from his position and was released under minor marijuana offences. To make matters worse, his wife, LaToya Cantrell, is showing no sympathy. She was quoted as saying, “I absolutely do not condone his actions….I hope this incident will encourage Jason to seek professional help.” Mrs. Cantrell, who is running for New Orleans City Council is not letting this tarnish her campaign. But can you really blame her?

What do you think about it all? Should Romney cut federal funding to PBS, if elected as the next President? Does it even matter? Was Jason Cantrell just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Could his wife have been more supportive?
